Lenny (Ralph Fiennes) is an ex cop that deals SQUID recordings. A SQUID is a “Superconducting Quantum Interference Device” that you put on your head and, through your cerebral cortex, it records everything you experience, what you see and feel, and if someone else plays what you recorded they’re going to see and feel the same. It’s, of course, illegal. Oh, and the movie is set in Los Angeles that became a war zone, everybody’s waiting for the new millenium, and there’s some police conspiracy, so you can see where this is going.
This is one of those movies. The ones that got it wrong, but actually got it right! It’s wrong about some predictions for the near future (Y2K), but soooo right when it comes to sci-fi / cyberpunk elements and inventions.
The year is not that important anyway. The SQUID is, and it’s a pretty cool idea. Who cares about drugs or mischief when you can just put a SQUID on your head ( 😀 ), be someone else and, let’s say, rob a Chinese restaurant, if you will. You can experience practically whatever you want through that device.
But imagine if you get a nasty recording. A snuff recording. What would you do? What if you start to get more and more, but now the footages are about your friend? Or you? Dude, there’s some serious stuff going on. And now some renegade cops are somehow involved? Oh, snap! – So that’s what’s happening to poor Ralph Fiennes in this movie.
To make it even more interesting;
- he can’t stop thinking about his ex (a singer wearing tight and tiny dresses, portrayed by Juliette Lewis)
- his companions and best friends are Angela Bassett (who’s got a thing for him) and Tom Sizemore
- the snuff recordings have a little extra twist (the perpetrator does something with the SQUID, but I’m obligated not to tell you what. Although I would really like to…)
- and for the music junkies – you should check out the soundtrack, it has a bit of everything, and most of the bands appear in the movie (Skunk Anansie, Testament…)
So, if you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for?
